Pompeii : A Novel, by Robert Harris

Read and reviewed in August, 2007. It is no longer in my possession.

I just finished Pompeii this evening. It was very well written, an excellent story combining fact and fiction relating to the events preceding and during the eruption of Mt. Vesuvius in 79 A.D. The technical details of the Roman aqueduct system were explained so clearly that even I could understand them! Weaved perfectly along with the technical descriptions were actual history, from Pliny and others, and a sweet love story amidst the corruption and degradation of ancient Roman society.

I plan to give this book to MrHorse to read, then we will send it to Birmingham, Alabama in time to be released at the Pompeii exhibit at the Museum of Art there in October. (Birmingham's "mascot" and most familiar symbol is a statue of Vulcan which stands atop Red Mountain, just south of the city. The city of Pompeii, and all of ancient Rome, had been celebrating Vulcan's feast day, Vulcanalia, when the eruption occurred.)

  1. I listened to the audio version of Imperium by Robert Harris last January and really enjoyed this book. Here's a link to my review: http://captivatedreader.blogspot.com/2014/01/imperium-cicero-series-1-by-robert.html

  2. Sounds fascinating! I will certainly look for other books by Robert Harris, including Imperium.
I am much more interested in history now than I was when I was in school, and I think that well written and researched historical fiction has sparked my interest.
